Asylum seekers should be allowed to work under certain conditions 00:03:20 2016-06-20
A non-profit human rights orgainsation, Justice Centre, has called on the government to allow asylum seekers to work under certain circumstances while their applications for refugee status are being processed. Isaac Shaffer from the group says under the current system, they are not allowed to take up jobs and have to live on handouts for many years. He says there are fears that allowing asylum seekers to work would attract people who are not facing persecution back home to disguise as asylum seekers and come to Hong Kong for economic reasons. But he tells Jim Gould that this problem could be solved by shortening the processing time so that economic migrants would not be able to earn money in the territory for a long period of time.
