The July 1st March + the Political Landscape; Teens and Underage Sex; Live Chickens Go Back On Sale
The police said 15,500 people took part in the march from Victoria Park to the government headquarters on July 1st. Organisers claimed a turnout of 47,000. It was the lowest attendance since the event first became an annual one in 2003. The day before the march, Chief Executive Donald Tsang visited Shamshuipo, an attempt to seem proactive on livelihood issues. Among marchers, livelihood issues took precedence over politics. But what does the march turnout, and public opinion, tell us about public opinion of Hong Kong ’ s current political and economic scene?
The Hong Kong Council of Social Service and a group of youth outreach teams recently conducted a survey of a specific group of young people aged between 11 and 18. 81% said they considered premarital sex acceptable. 63% say they ’ ve had sex, and the average age at which they first did so was 14. The youngest reported age for first sexual experience was 12, four years below the age of consent. More than 20% of those interviewed were accepting of prostitution and one-night-stands. Those interviewed however may not have been a cross-section of all teenagers.
Poultry traders received a delivery of poultry to sell in the markets on the Wednesday before our programme, but many are still warning that they might take legal action against the government over what they claim to be the "unreasonable" overnight ban. As many as 100 live poultry stalls are expected to resume business today under a new policy that outlaws the keeping of live poultry overnight. More than 20 transport workers and wholesalers issued the legal threat ahead of Wednesday's lifting of the 21-day ban on the import and sale of live chickens.
